In 2008 NSW Tourism identified agri tourism (or tourism on farm) as a growing industry for our area. The Long Paddock Committee (LPC) have been funded by the Department of Agricuture Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) to run the Long Paddock Tourism on the Land Project (LPTL).
The Long Paddock recently completed the second stage of their Tourism on the Land project with three information workshops held at Riverside Retreat Hay, Restdown Wines Mathoura and East Tolans Deniliquin. Over 70 interested participants attended the workshops to find out more about Agri and nature based tourism.
Rose Wright Manager for Australian Regional Tourism Research Centre Southern Cross University who presented the workshop held at Hay said “There were 3 highly successful days with 33 Expressions of interest received from participants who are interested in following on with the project business planning sessions “,
“It never ceases to amaze us of the innovation and passion of farmers in western and southern NSW. They are typical of the Australian character that through adversity and challenge breeds innovation. If we can capture some of this and provide visitors to the region an opportunity to connect with these people in these places regional NSW and the Long Paddock will be one of the most exciting journeys travelers to regional Australia can experience.”
“The great diversity and range of ideas for tourism on the land from the farmers in the region was outstanding. We regard the days as being highly successful and very targeted to people who are looking at diversifying or value-adding to produce on their property. This is a very sound beginning for sustainable product and experience development for visitors to the Long Paddock in the medium term.”
Ten local buisnesses have just completed the the first of three 2-day workshops held at Pretty Pine. The next workshops will be held in Denilqquin in February.
A Tourism on the Land network group is now being established since the workshops. Plans are underway for a network meeting/ workshop early 2010.
